Emergency support after explosion

Fast acting St John Ambulance first aiders in Shropshire raced to the scene of an explosion following a blast in Shrewsbury town centre yesterday (Sunday 3 January).

Kind hearted volunteers sprang into action within five minutes of an emergency call, to help support the ambulance service after a suspected gas explosion at flats.

First aiders, ambulances, 4x4's and a mobile treatment centre were deployed to help ease the pressure on the emergency services and treat around 29 injured people.

David Davis, St John Ambulance County Staff Officer in Shropshire said: 'Our volunteers acted extremely fast and responded within five minutes of the call. We deployed all of our resources within 45minutes and helped to ease the burden on the emergency services.

'This is a brilliant example of how dedicated our volunteers are and how willing they are to show their support in their local community and help those in need.'
